ABC10 Reporter Andie Judson Honored as a First Amendment Champion by Society of Professional Journalists

[SACRAMENTO, CA] – ABC10, a TEGNA-owned media station, is proud to announce that Investigative Reporter Andie Judson has been recognized as a First Amendment Champion with a James Madison Freedom of Information Award by the Society of Professional Journalists Northern California Chapter. Judson was honored with the coveted award in the TV/Video category. The Freedom of Information Committee recognizes individuals and organizations whose work advances transparency, freedom of information and the public’s right to know and presents the awards in the spirit of James Madison, the creative force behind the First Amendment. An official ceremony for the 38th Annual James Madison Awards will take place on the evening of March 16 – Freedom of Information Day – in San Francisco at the Crystal Lounge & Ballroom at Marines' Memorial Club & Hotel.

“I’m honored to be recognized with this prestigious award,” said Andie Judson. “The greatest reward with this series has been to see actual change happen on a legislative level for which ABC10 was credited to help make it happen. This is right in line with the purpose of the James Madison Freedom of Information Awards and why journalism is so very important.”

Andie Judson, a seventh-generation Californian and award-winning investigative reporter for the ABC10’s Originals Team, researched and produced a five-part docuseries titled “Price of Care: Taken by the State” that was a product of a two-year investigation of California's flawed conservatorship system. This latest honor by the Society of Professional Journalists was based on the second installment (year two) of ABC10’s “Price of Care” series of reports.

Also, after the airing of the series, Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill (AB1663) that is meant to reform the conservatorship system that impacts vulnerable community members – those with developmental disabilities, children in the court system, and the elderly. This investigative docuseries was applauded by multiple organizations including the Center for Judicial Excellence, Disability Rights California and the Spectrum Institute.

“I want to congratulate Andie for her excellence in reporting that led her to be honored as a First Amendment Champion by the Society of Professional Journalists,” said Risa Omega, President & General Manager of ABC10. “I’d like to also commend her dedicated team and our entire ABC10 reporting staff for continually producing in-depth stories about a wide range of issues and important topics that impact the lives of our viewers.”

In addition to Judson, ABC10 team members Rory Ward, Tyler Horst, Mike Bunnell, Sabrina Sanchez, Xavier Uriarte and Gonzalo Magaña contributed to this impactful series of investigative reports. ABC10’s investigative and award-winning news coverage is led by Director of Content Jill Manuel and Director of Special Projects and Engagement Gonzalo Magaña.

“I’m incredibly proud that ABC10 continues to set the standard for exemplary news coverage in Northern California,” said Jill Manuel, Director of Content for ABC10. “Andie and the team’s work on ‘Price of Care’ is a perfect example of how we continue to validate our We Stand for You brand by giving voice to the voiceless and holding the powerful accountable.”
