ABC10’s “Price of Care: Taken by the State” Multi-Part Series Receives Peabody Award Nomination

[SACRAMENTO, CA] – ABC10, a TEGNA-owned media station, has been honored with a Peabody Award nomination for “Price of Care: Taken by the State,” a two-year investigation of California's flawed conservatorship system. Earning a Peabody Award is one of the most prestigious honors in media and ABC10 was selected as a nominee by unanimous vote from their Board of Jurors.

ABC10’s ”Price of Care” multi-part series was produced by investigative reporter Andie Judson, Director Of Special Projects and Engagement Gonzalo Magaña, Investigative Producers Rory Ward and Tyler Horst, and Producers Mike Bunnell and Sabrina Sanchez, all of whom are part of the award-winning ABC10’s Originals Team.

"Our goal with the ‘Price of Care’ is to seek the truth and uncover systemic and institutional failures in order to fix them," said Director of Special of Projects and Engagement, Gonzalo Magaña.

ABC10’s award-winning news coverage is led by Director of Content Jill Manuel, who said “Our ‘Price of Care docuseries is garnering the attention it deserves and we are absolutely thrilled it has now been nominated for a Peabody Award. Our team excels in longform journalism, and we’re committed to continuing to produce special investigations and explore a wide range of important issues that impact so many lives.”

“Our newsroom is filled with talented journalists experienced in the art of storytelling,” said Risa Omega, President & General Manager of ABC10. “Being recognized with a Peabody Award is quite an honor and I am incredibly proud of our entire news operation that works so diligently to provide meaningful stories for Northern Californians.”

After the “Price of Care” series aired on ABC10, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill (AB1663) to reform the conservatorship system that impacts vulnerable community members – those with developmental disabilities including older adults. Multiple organizations, including the Center for Judicial Excellence, Disability Rights California, and the Spectrum Institute, applauded this investigative docuseries. “Your reporting passed a law. Your reporting is getting people out of conservatorships,” said Judy Mark, President of Disability Rights California.

The final Peabody Award winners in all categories will be announced on May 9, and the awards presentation ceremony will take place on June 11 in Los Angeles.

This nomination is the latest in a continuing series of recognition and awards earned by ABC10, including a 2022 Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award, also one of the highest honors in the industry.
